THE BANKS PENINSULA, MOUNT PLEASANT AND LYTTLETON / OUR NZ ADVENTURE

On our first morning in Christchurch, we headed to the Banks Peninsula to seek out the views from the top of Mount Pleasant.

We took the cable car to the top, which had spectacular views of the city on one side, and Lyttleton Harbour on the other.

The impressive Lyttleton Harbour was one of the main ports for missions to Antarctica, and the small central island was once a quarantine zone for these missions and has also been a leper colony.
We drove down to Lyttleton, only a 5-minute drive away, to visit the Lyttleton Bakery. The Afghan biscuit did not disappoint, and the meat pies were delicious! We were surprised to discover the high street was strangely hipster - a decent proportion of the small number of shops were either coffee shops, natural food stores or homemade/sustainable gift stores. What looks like an industrial port town from first glance, had a lot more to offer.

This hidden gem of a town was lovely to see, both from the top of the mountain and up close.
